A new powerhouse is emerging in the English top flight.

Pep Guardiola has hailed Newcastle’s development, naming them as future Premier League challengers.

Manchester City defeated the Magpies 2-0 in their Premier League match on Saturday. Phil Foden put the Citizens ahead in the first half before Bernardo Silva doubled their lead later on.

Newcastle came into the game on the back of their defeat against Manchester United in the Carabao Cup final. But Guardiola believes the Magpies have already shown they will be a major force in the Premier League in the coming years.

“Their threat is not a surprise,” Guardiola said post-match.

“There is a reason why they were in the Carabao Cup final and for a lot of minutes they were better than United. This team and this club in the next few years will be a threat for the title.”

A Saudi Arabia-backed consortium took over Newcastle last season, providing them with all kinds of new financial possibilities.

Since then, the Magpies have consistently stayed in the top-six spots on the Premier League table. The likes of Bruno Guimares, Nick Pope, and Anthony Gordon have become the cornerstones of Howe’s squad since joining Newcastle.

The Magpies will most likely sign more reinforcements next summer, with the likes of Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Roberto Firmino emerging as their new transfer targets.
