As part of the ongoing criticism against Europe’s new Super League, Pep Guardiola gave his two cents on the matter earlier on Friday.

Despite being part of a club that is pushing for Europe’s infamous Super League, Pep Guardiola still positioned himself against the idea. The Catalan manager didn’t get the memo that the Citizens are one of the clubs included in this exclusive group. Just yesterday, we heard from FIFA and the rest of the football federations opposing the initiative.

In fact, they pretty much-threatened footballers with a ban from all international competitions if they played this tournament. But there’s another issue that needs to be addressed about this European Super League. Making it happen could effectively kill several minor leagues in the rest of the world. Pep Guardiola wanted to shed some light on this issue that worries him quite a bit, given his socialist nature.

Guardiola’s eternal fight to defend the little guy.

After his recent statements against the European Super League, Pep Guardiola clearly positions himself directly against his club’s interest. But the Catalan manager never minded going against the system. Historically, Guardiola has always been a champion for human rights and equality: “I have the feeling we cannot lose the local leagues, what it means for the FA Cup, the leagues,” he said via Sky Sports.

“What we should do is make every single league in Europe stronger than what it is, less teams, better championships, better League One, better League Two, better Premier League with less teams in every competition. Go to the quality over quantity. To make a super Premier League, you have to reduce the teams, but we cannot kill the lower divisions or the Premier League itself.”
