Ahead of La Liga’s El Clasico, Pep Guardiola made his best effort to explain Spanish football’s current situation during a press conference.

Pep Guardiola knows Spanish football all too well since he was a teenager. During his upbringing in Catalonia, the Manchester City manager grew up going to Camp Nou and work as a ball boy when he trained in La Masia. This experience taught him the details about football in Spain and which clubs were the biggest of the bunch.

An eternal battle between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid reached a tipping point when he was the Catalan club’s manager. However, time has changed and football in Spain is no longer the best in the world. In fact, Guardiola made the decision to coach in England when the time was just right.

Today, the Premier League is arguably the best competition on the planet. But Pep is confident that the clubs in his home country can get back to normal before the end of the season. Guardiola is not worried about the complicated moments that Spain’s biggest clubs are going through.

Real Madrid and Barcelona are sleeping giants.

There’s a recurrent narrative that describes Spanish football going through difficult economic times and how it’s affecting the biggest clubs in the country. But for Guardiola, this low level of performance is more related to how exhausted the players from both teams truly are.

When asked about El Clasico, Guardiola said: “At what time is it?” asked Pep via Sport. “We will be flying back to Manchester at that time, I won’t watch it live. Barcelona and Madrid will get their rhythm back. They will win matches again and get back to their normal positions in each competition.

“I am sure they will find victories and they will get back to their winning dynamic. Anything can happen when it’s only one game, but none of us have rested between seasons. At the big clubs, they are so demanding that sometimes you need more time. Especially for Barça and Koeman. They need time but they will get to where they need to be.”
