The French midfielder has stayed out of action with injury since the start of the current season.

Paul Pogba has ‘worsened’ his knee injury by choosing conservative treatment, according to his doctor Roberto Rossi.

The France international ended his six-year spell at Manchester United to secure a return to Juventus earlier this summer.

However, a knee injury has prevented him from making his second debut for the Bianconeri. He initially decided against undergoing surgery to solve a lesion to the lateral meniscus in his right knee.

However, test results convinced doctors to conduct the operation on Monday. Pogba now faces an eight-week rehab period that casts doubt on his chances of playing for France in the upcoming World Cup.

“The lesion to the lateral meniscus was tricky because the tissue was fragmented and the injury had worsened and when the player tried to force it by running into the field,” Rossi told Tuttosport.

“The conservative therapy did not work. On the contrary, the injury worsened. When we intervened, there were no conditions to complete a broken meniscus suture. It was only possible to intervene with [surgery].”

In Pogba’s absence, Juventus have found a difficult start to the new season. The Bianconeri sit seventh in Serie A while losing their Champions League opener against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday.
