Thomas Partey’s scan results delivered a mixture of good and bad news for Arsenal after suffering an ankle injury last weekend.

Arsenal are set to lose Thomas Partey for their opening games of the new season, but they’re optimistic his ankle injury isn’t as bad as originally feared.

A Ruben Loftus-Cheek challenge in Sunday’s 2-1 friendly defeat to Chelsea caused Partey damage to his ankle. He left the pitch before the first half ended, prompting fears of another long spell out.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta fueled those fears by admitting Partey’s injury didn’t look good. The latest reports, however, suggest the midfielder will only spend a brief spell on the sidelines.

According to Football London, Arsenal expect Partey to miss their first two Premier League games against Brentford on August 13 and Chelsea nine days later.

But Arteta’s men are quietly optimistic that the Ghanaian could return sooner than expected if his recovery goes to plan.

This news will come as an enormous relief for Partey. Injuries plagued his first season in north London following a €50 million move from Atletico Madrid star last October, leaving him sidelined for long periods.

He will apparently see another ankle specialist before the end of the week to understand the full extent of his injury.
