Fenerbahce has terminated Ozil’s contract ahead of the next season.

Mesut Ozil will reportedly join Istanbul Basaksehir after leaving Fenerbahce.

Following a spat with former manager Ismail Kartal, Fenerbahce decided to drop Ozil from their squad last season.

The former Arsenal star expressed his will to make a new start at the Turkish side, but Fenerbahce terminated his contract on Wednesday.

A statement from the club reads: “It has been agreed that the contract between our club and Mesut Ozil will be terminated by mutual agreement.

“We wish Mesut Ozil success for the rest of his career.”

According to Goal, Fenerbahce’s Super Lig rivals, Istanbul Basaksehir, are close to signing the experienced midfielder.

Basaksehir had intensified their efforts to sign Ozil in recent weeks. The club are now on the verge of adding the former Real Madrid star to their ranks ahead of the next season.

The club’s Twitter account posted a quote that their president made about the German star in 2018.

“One day our paths will cross in Basaksehir,” Goksel Gumusdag told Bild.

He added: “If he wants to come, we will do everything we can to get him.”

An official statement from Basaksehir is now imminent, with Ozil being ready to start a new chapter in his career.
