Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has revealed the one thing that surprised him about teammate Andy Robertson after he joined Liverpool.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has tagged Andy Robertson as the ‘joker’ of the Liverpool dressing room.
The former Arsenal midfielder says he was surprised by Robertson’s character when he arrived at Anfield in 2017.
Oxlade-Chamberlain had faced Robertson while he was still at Hull City and admits he would not have predicted his character from what he saw on the pitch.
Asked who the “joker” was at Liverpool during a segment with Soccer AM’s Teammates, Oxlade-Chamberlain said: “Andy Robertson, without a shadow of a doubt.”
“He’s not what I expected either, from playing against him at Hull. I’m the type of player, on the pitch, mid-game, I can give the opposition a bit, but in a friendly, jokey way.”
“And I was always on the right wing against Robbo, he never really gave me anything. He’s a bit horrible on the pitch.”
“I’ve turned up to Liverpool and the guy doesn’t shut up, honestly. He comes in the dressing room, physio room, canteen, you hear him before you see him guaranteed.”
“But he’s a great lad and definitely the joker.”
Despite being hailed as one of the best left-backs in world football, Oxlade-Chamberlain also revealed how bad Robertson is when taking part in the rondo training drill.
He added: “I say to him, everyone, all the time, ‘how can someone that is so bad in a box or a rondo, like the worst I have ever seen, be so good in a match?”
“You watch him in a rondo, and it’s like he has never played football before. He gets in a match, and he’s so reliable, it’s a skill.”
