Liverpool might have faltered for a good part of the season but Michael Owen has singled out Thiago Alcantara for failing to catch the eye.

Thiago has struggled so much for Liverpool he won’t start if the Champions League final was tomorrow, says Owen.

The Spanish midfielder made the move to Liverpool this summer from Bayern Munich.

Given the reputation on his shoulders, many expected Thiago to take the Premier League by storm.

The 29-year-old then gave the slightest hint of the above after impressing in his league debut against Chelsea.

However, Thiago has failed to impress since then and has struggled on and off the pitch.

So far, the Spaniard is yet to register a single goal or assist in over 16 total appearances for the Reds this season.

He was recently labelled as a ‘luxury’ signing for the club and even had to be defended by club captain Jordan Henderson.

Ex-Liverpool star Michael Owen has now weighed in on Thiago’s struggles at the club.

“He’s struggling, like the rest of the team but it’s not his fault.” the former striker said as cited by The Mirror.

“I agree with Scholesy that he’s a central player. Playing out wide, you need more legs. But if you put him central then that goes against what Liverpool have based their success on.”

“You could probably get away with it with the lesser teams when you just have loads of possession and he’s basically pulling the strings everywhere.”

“But to answer your question, a one-off game, Champions League final tomorrow and my whole squad was fit. I would go back to type and no (he does not play). How did we win the Champions League?”

“The hardest thing I feel watching him is that he’s got more talent in his little finger than virtually every midfielder in that team.”

“He’s so talented. He’s one of the most talented in the world, yet we are saying if it was a big game tomorrow.”

“Would you play him (Thiago)? And I think your general answer is you would probably go with your (Jordan) Hendersons, Fabinhos and (Georginio) Wijnaldums.”
