In a heated debate on social media, Cesc Fabregas debated with Michael Owen about goals and assists in the modern football era.
Football has changed in regards to goals and assists but not for Michael Owen, who got into a heated debate with Cesc Fabregas. During previous eras of the sport, goals were far more important than assists were. But modern times started adding more value to assists because everybody started to realize how hard it is to create goals. Even though scoring them is the ultimate objective in this sport, there’s a whole creative aspect that comes with providing an assist.
Some strikers are only used to pushing the ball to the back of the net with only their positioning effort. However, getting an assist comes with a lot more work behind it that’s been generally overlooked. Some old school strikers such as Michael Owen don’t seem to agree with this as he responded to a follower who said that assists are no different to goals: “Agreed, but my point is that in general it’s far harder to score goals than assist them yet we are starting to measure them as equal which is b******s.”
Cesc Fabregas’ heated response to Owen.
It was only natural that one of the Premier League’s best assist providers would respond to this provocation from Michael Owen. Cesc Fabregas became one of the greatest creative midfielders in English football’s history. Some of his assists are legendary for both Arsenal and Chelsea during his prime. This is what Fabregas responded to Owen on his official Twitter account after Micheal’s diss.
“I don’t completely agree there Michael. Making and creating can be sometimes twice as hard as making a run or scoring a goal. Don’t underestimate the little time or space we have in midfield to take the best decision for you guys, plus the imagination and creativity we should have to find you,” wrote Cesc. After reading this exchange, do you think goals or assists are more important?
