A hard-fought win keeps Real Madrid within five points of Barcelona at the top of the La Liga table.

Real Madrid defeated Osasuna 2-0 in their La Liga game on Saturday. A late goal from Federico Valverde determined the outcome of an eventful match.

Two different halves!

Real Madrid started off as the better side but rarely managed to create chances inside Osasuna’s box.

As the game went on, the Blancos’ pressing allowed them to find their momentum. A misplaced backpass nearly cost Osasuna a goal, but Vinicus Jr missed the shot from close range.

Contrary to the first half, both sides started attacking after the break. Vinicius got close to scoring again while Moi Gomez hit the post for Osasuna.

The hosts’ defensive mistakes became worse as Real Madrid increased the pressure in the final 20 minutes. The La Liga champions finally broke the deadlock through Valverde in the 78th minute.

A precise cutback from Vinicius found Valverde, who smashed it past Sergio Herrera with a precise shot from inside the box. Osasuna tried to mount a late comeback, but the Blancos secured their victory with another goal in the extra time.

This time, Asensio beat Herrera in a one-on-one situation to make it 2-0 for the visitors.

The victory shrinks Barca’s lead at the top of the table to five points, but the Catalans have a game at hand.
Next up, Real Madrid will travel to Liverpool for their next Champions League clash on Tuesday.
