Mesut Ozil took to a rather surprising list for his best ever Gunners XI he has played with. Only one current Arsenal star made the cut.
Mesut Ozil has picked some surprising choices in his best XI of Arsenal players since he joined the club back in 2013.
The World Cup-winning has been left out of the Gunners’ Premier League squad since the start of the season. He has been forced to become an expensive ‘Twitter cheerleader’ for the club in recent months as speculation continues to grow regarding his future.
Ozil took to a Q and A on Twitter as he looked to answer some questions from his fans. The German has done this on a number of occasions in recent times.
As expected, there were plenty of fans asking about his likely move to Fenerbahce, which Ozil somewhat confirmed.
But @sirgunner1886 also asked: “Who is your top Arsenal XI in the era you played for the club?”
Ozil has been an Arsenal player since 2013 following a big move at the time from Real Madrid. Indeed, the 32-year-old has played with some of the club’s most illustrious stars over the years. However, only one current star makes it that high on his all-time list.
Ozil named a starting lineup with David Ospina, Bacary Sagna, Laurent Koscielny, Per Mertesacker, Sead Kolasinac, Aaron Ramsey, Santi Cazorla, Serge Gnabry, Alexis Sanchez, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and himself.
Perhaps surprisingly, only one of the 11 – not including himself – is currently at Arsenal as of January 2021; Aubameyang.
Also in the Q&A, Ozil gave a hint his next preferred destination could be Turkish side Fenerbahce as reports have confirmed: “I grew up as a Fenerbahce fan as a kid in Germany – every German-Turkish person supports a Turkish team when they grow up in Germany. And mine was Fenerbahce.”
“Fenerbahce is like Real Madrid in Spain. The biggest club in the country.”
Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta has already admitted Ozil could be allowed to leave the club and added that there are discussions in full swing with Fenerbahce at the moment.
