The Red Devils legend returns to MLS after leaving Derby County earlier this summer.
DC United have confirmed Wayne Rooney will take charge as their new manager.
The former England captain played for the Major League Soccer club toward the end of his career. He spent a year and a half at DC United before moving to Derby County, where he announced his retirement in January 2021.
The 36-year-old parted ways with the Rams after spending only 18 months as their manager. He will now return to coaching by taking charge at the Audi Field.
A statement from the club’s website reads: “Rooney is a soccer legend and one of the most exciting and dynamic up-and-coming managers in our sport.
“He’s already proven in his young coaching career that he knows how to lead a group through adversity.”
“He has an understanding of our league and what it takes to be successful in Major League Soccer thanks to his two-year stay with us as a player.
“The passion he showed while wearing Black-and-Red electrified our city and our club and we are so excited to welcome him back as our Head Coach.”
Rooney joined DC United as a player in June 2018, following a spell at Everton. He scored 25 goals in his 58 appearances for the MLS side before returning to England to work as a player-coach at Derby County in January 2020.
