The Magpies have completed their second deal of the summer transfer window as they prepare for Champions League football next season.

Newcastle United have signed Sandro Tonali from AC Milan on a five-year contract until 2028. The transfer fee is reported to be €70 million with add-ons. The fee will make Tonali the most expensive player from Italy.

Newcastle confirmed the transfer on Monday. In the statement, Tonali expressed his gratitude to the club for the opportunity and promised to give his best on the pitch.

The 23-year-old is a versatile midfielder who played more games than any other Milan player last season. The 14-time Italy international clocked up nearly 4,000 minutes across all competitions. He helped guide Milan to their first Serie A title in 11 years in the 2021/22 season. His performances also played a key role in the club’s run to the Champions League semi-finals last season.

Last term, Newcastle qualified for the Champions League for the first time in 20 years after a top-four finish under manager Eddie Howe. Tonali will be their second summer recruit after forward Yankuba Minteh. The 18-year-old Gambian has joined the Magpies from Danish side Odense Boldklub for a €7 million fee.
