Ligue 1 giants Marseille have confirmed their capture of Matteo Guendouzi on a season-long loan deal from Arsenal.
Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi has completed a season-long loan move to Marseille, who have the option to buy him permanently next summer.
Guendouzi returns to France hoping to kick-start his career once more. The 22-year-old’s days as a Gunner have been numbered ever since his bust-up with Brighton’s Neal Maupay in June 2020. Mikel Arteta made it no secret his distaste for the midfielder’s attitude, and the manager has never played him since.
Now Guendouzi, who spent last season on loan at Hertha BSC in Germany, has left the north London club once again.
“Matteo Guendouzi has signed up with Marseille for a one-year loan with an option to buy,” read a statement from Marseille.
“Guendouzi is a modern midfielder, technically strong and with good passing ability.
“A player of character, he has a good view of the game. These qualities he will undoubtedly be able to share with the Marseille team.”
Marseille will reportedly pay Arsenal £850,000 for Guendouzi’s loan deal and an additional £9 million if they decide to sign the Frenchman on a permanent deal next summer.
Guendouzi has made 82 appearances in all competitions for Arsenal, managing one goal and five assists.
