Bayer Leverkusen have secured the services of one of Manchester United’s young defensive talents.

After getting almost no playtime in the first half of this season, Timothy Fosu-Mensah has completed a move to Bundesliga challengers Bayer Leverkusen. The 23-year-old right-back never truly asserted himself in Manchester. In fact, he was even loaned out to Crystal Palace and Fulham a few seasons ago.

Fosu-Mensah had been at Manchester United since 2014 when the Red Devils paid a €380 thousand fee for the 16-year-old. However, the Dutch defender had only collected 29 appearances at Old Trafford since 2016. As he was due to end his contract in the summer, it looked like there was no future for Fosu-Mensah at United.

Although his youth club Ajax were reportedly interested in his services, the Germans came out on top. In fact, Leverkusen are believed to have paid around €1.7 million to have the player join their ranks.

Fosu-Mensah also spoke about his first impressions at Leverkusen.

The 23-year-old defender seemed excited about his new opportunity. Fosu-Mensah claimed that his move was “a step into a really interesting and very strong league in which Bayer 04 has been one of the best teams for years.”

“I’m really looking forward to this team and also to working with Peter Bosz,” said the right-back. “In the past few days, I’ve talked a lot with the coach. Conversations with Simon Rolfes and Rudi Völler have convinced me that there are great prospects in Leverkusen. Both for me personally and for us as a team. It’s going to be really exciting.”
