The former Barcelona captain has started what could be a career-defining week with perhaps his final Pichichi award.

Lionel Messi has officially been crowned as the winner of the 2020/21 season Pichichi award.

The Argentina international has won the accolade for a record eighth time in his career after finishing as La Liga’s top goalscorer last season on 30 goals in 35 games, plus 11 assists.

Messi has moved two titles clear of Athletic Club legend Telmo Zarra as the player with the most Pichichi awards.

“I don’t know whether we will see someone surpass me, but I can only say that it is an honor to be in the history of the Spanish LaLiga,” Messi told Marca, the outlet which hands out the Pichichi, in Paris.

“It seemed crazy to overtake Zarra and in the end, I was able to overcome him. I am very grateful.”

La Liga fans also voted Messi as their player of the season for his exploits at Barcelona.

The Paris Saint-Germain star hopes to go one better on Monday evening by winning a seventh Ballon d’Or. France Football will announce the winner at a gala in Paris.
