Former Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen has completed his move to Benfica. He joins the Portuguese side on a free transfer.

Jan Vertonghen has completed his move to Benfica on Friday afternoon.

The 33-year-old joins the club in a three-year deal keeping him in Portugal until 2023.

Vertonghen left Tottenham following the conclusion of their 2019/20 campaign in July.

The Belgian’s contract expired and the club were not keen to offer him an extension. The defender found himself surplus to options for Mourinho in the just-concluded season.

In the Premier League, Vertonghen featured only 23 times for Spurs last term. However, a new adventure awaits the Belgian at the Estádio Sport Lisboa e Benfica.

The 33-year-old was announced as a Benfica player this afternoon via the club’s website.

Speaking at his unveiling, Vertonghen said: “I came here to win trophies and I want to help the club to achieve those things. Becoming [Portuguese] champion is definitely a goal I want to achieve.”

He added: “If you look at the Benfica team now, it’s great. It’s one of the goals of the club to continue playing in the Champions League and I think we can definitely achieve that.”

Tottenham have quickly moved on from Vertonghen as well. The club’s new-signing Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has already taken the no 5 jersey worn by the Belgian while at the club.
