Barcelona have confirmed the appointment of Ronald Koeman as the new head coach on a two-year contract.
In the aftermath of the 8-2 humiliation at the hands of Bayern Munich in Champions League semi-finals, their worst defeat in European competition history, FC Barcelona dismissed manager Quique Setien.
Setien joined Barca only last January but was relieved of his duties after guiding the club to their first trophyless season since 2007/08.
A number of candidates have since been linked with the very demanding job of taking the reins of the Catalan giants.
Former Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri, ex Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino, the club’s very own legend Xavi Hernandez, and the Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman were all in contention to take the hot seat at Camp Nou.
On Wednesday, Barca ended all the speculations by announcing Koeman as their next manager.
A statement on the official club website read: “FC Barcelona and Ronald Koeman have reached an agreement for the Dutchman to take over as first team coach until 30 June 2022.
“The Blaugrana legend, hero of Wembley, the man who handed Barça their first ever victory in the European Cup returns to Camp Nou. This time, however, he will do so as coach as the Dutchman brings more than 20 years of experience as manager and eight trophies on his CV.
“Ronald Koeman comes to FC Barcelona after coaching in the Premier League, La Liga, the Dutch league, the Portuguese league and also on the international stage with the Netherlands.”
