Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi has joined Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin on loan for the rest of the season.
Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi has joined Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin on a season-long loan as confirmed by the club’s social media channel.
The Frenchman arrived at Arsenal in the summer of 2018 and surprised by making an immediate impression in the first team under Unai Emery.
However, Guendouzi fell out of favour under new boss Mikel Arteta following football’s coronavirus shutdown.
He has not featured in a matchday squad since the 2-1 defeat to Brighton in June. In that game, he clashed with Seagulls forward Neal Maupay and was not present at Wembley as the Gunners lifted the FA Cup in August.
Arteta had suggested prior to the start of the current season that all of his players would be starting again with a clean slate. However, Guendouzi has remained exiled, along with German playmaker Mesut Ozil.
Arsenal will now be hopeful a loan move could be a breath of fresh air for the youngster looking to get back in full action on the pitch.
Guendouzi will wear the number 8 jersey for Hertha Berlin and that squad number hints at a first team role for the Frenchman.
