Arsenal have completed the signing of goalkeeper Alex Runarsson on a four-year contract from Ligue 1 club Dijon.

Following the departure of Emiliano Martinez, Arsenal have signed Runarsson as a backup option to Bernd Leno.

The 25-year-old reportedly cost the Gunner around £1.5m and will wear the no.13 jersey at the club.

Runarsson was at the Arsenal training ground last Friday to undergo a medical ahead of the move.

The goalkeeper signing comes after a recommendation from Arsenal goalkeeper coach Inaki Cana. The two worked together at Danish club, Nordsjaelland.

On joining the Gunners, Runarsson told the Arsenal website: “I’m just extremely happy, extremely proud, it is a big day for me and my family. I can’t wait to get started!”

Technical director Edu said: “We’re very pleased to welcome Alex to our squad. We have been monitoring him for some time and from the analysis, he has strong attributes that we look for in a goalkeeper and as a person.”

Mikel Arteta added: “We want to create healthy competition for places and we look forward to seeing Alex bring further depth to the goalkeeping position.”

Runarsson is in line to make his debut for Arsenal when they take on Leicester City in the Carabao cup on Wednesday.
