The Nigerian legend offered his take on his old club’s need to strengthen over the summer.

Nwankwo Kanu believes Arsenal need to strengthen in ‘almost every position’ ahead of their Champions League return for next season.

Despite chasing Manchester City for the Premier League title, Arsenal have already booked a spot in Europe’s premier club competition. It ended a six-year absence in the process.

That said, Kanu knows the challenges of the Champions League, having reached back-to-back finals with Ajax and lifting the trophy in 1995. He also highlighted Arsenal’s vulnerability without William Saliba as an example of why the club needs improvements for success in Europe.

“Next season Arsenal will make their big comeback in the Champions League,” the former Gunners striker told Bettors.ng.

“They want to compete in that competition and have a say in the games. If this team remains as a whole, with the addition of some experienced players, it will remain competitive and continue to grow.

“The squad needs to be even broader next season because the Champions League takes a lot of grit. Almost every position should be doubled [in strength]. You can see now that when a regular player is out of action for a few weeks, like William Saliba, then it gets a bit difficult for the squad.”

Kanu played for Arsenal between 1999 and 2004. The Nigerian played 196 games for the Gunners, managing 44 goals and 32 assists. He won five trophies in London and was a member of the legendary ‘Invincibles’ squad.
