The German side suffered an unexpected home defeat in the Europa League.

Rangers defeated Borussia Dortmund 4-2 in the first leg of their Europa League play-off for the last-16 round. Giovanni van Bronkhorst’s side used several defensive mistakes from the hosts to their benefit, taking a big step toward winning the tie.

Dortmund’s defeat comes two weeks after their humiliating 5-2 loss against Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga. The German giants’ form has come as a major disappointment for Matts Hummels, who believes their ‘complicated’ style of football is the main source of their defensive issues.

Speaking in a post-match interview, the German star said (via Football Scotland): “If you look at the Leverkusen game [a 4-2 loss for Dortmund], we conceded four goals after unnecessarily losing the ball,” Hummels said after Thursday’s game.

“That happened with the first, second and fourth goals here.

“I think we know what our problem is. The coach mentions it often enough.

“We’re playing an awful lot of nonsensical football, a lot of illogical football and making our opponents so strong.

“Our football is also too complicated. If we play this way, we’ll sometimes win and sometimes lose but over the piece we won’t have success.”

Dortmund have recently closed the gap to Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich to six points. The Black and Yellows will return to action when they take on Borussia Monchengladbach in a crucial match on Sunday.
