The newly-promoted side have added one of the most promising Bundesliga strikers to their ranks ahead of the next season.

Nottingham Forest have confirmed the signing of Taiwo Awoniyi from Union Berlin.

The Nigerian star played a crucial role in Union’s impressive season that ended in their qualification for the next season’s Europa League.

The former Liverpool player will now return to England to start another chapter in his career. Forest have reportedly activated a £17.2million release clause in Awoniyi’s contract, tying him down to a five-year contract.

“I’m very excited to be here at Nottingham Forest,” said Awoniyi, who became Forest’s most expensive signing of all time.

“It’s always been my dream to play in the Premier League. Having spoken to Steve Cooper about our ambitions and looking at Forest, with its great history, it’s a club that I want to be part of.”

Having scored 15 goals in his 31 Bundesliga appearances last season, Awoniyi emerged as a new forward option for Nigeria ahead of the World Cup.

The transfer will increase the 24-year-old’s chances of getting a Super Eagles call-up for the tournament. However, he will still have to compete against Napoli’s Victor Osimhen to secure a place in Jose Peseiro’s lineup.

Following Awoniyi’s arrival, Forest will reportedly announce the signing of Dean Henderson from Manchester United.
