The 29-year-old Super Eagles star feels his days in the national team are numbered ahead of AFCON.

Nigeria captain Ahmed Musa expects the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations to be his last appearance in the tournament.

At 29 years of age, the experienced winger doesn’t expect to be part of the Super Eagles squad that travels to the Ivory Coast in 2023 to compete in the next AFCON tournament.

However, Musa has no immediate plans to leave the national team set-up as this year’s World Cup is very much in his sights.

‘This is my last AFCON’

“AFON is [every] two years, and I don’t think I’ll be in the national team in the next two years,” Ahmed Musa explained in a press conference on Monday.

“But we still have the World Cup, if we qualify, so I’ll take a chance if the coach selects me but in another two years I don’t think I can make it to AFCON so that is why I am saying this is my last AFCON.”

The former Leicester City star has won over a century of caps for Nigeria since making his international debut in 2010, supplying 17 goals and 13 assists.

He was a member of the team that won the 2013 AFCON title under the late Stephen Keshi and later helped Nigeria reach the semi-finals of the competition in 2019.

Musa, who has also represented the Super Eagles at two World Cups, joined Turkish club Fatih Karagumruk last summer.

As for Nigeria, the three-time AFCON winners begin their pursuit of a fourth title against Egypt on Tuesday in Group D.
