The Super Eagles manager has called up Innocent Bonke as Wilfred Ndidi’s replacement.

Nigeria are preparing to face Ghana in a two-legged World Cup qualifying tie next week. The Super Eagles must face their opponents without Wilfred Ndidi, who suffered an injury during Leicester City’s conference league game against Rennes earlier this week.

The Leicester star will not be able to play in any of the two upcoming games, staying on the sidelines with a knee ligament injury.

On Sunday, Nigeria manager Austin Eguavone announced Innocent Bonke will replace Ndidi in the Super Eagles lineup. The Lorient midfielder starred for Nigeria in the early stages of their current World Cup qualifying campaign.

Since joining Lorient from Malmo in January, Bonke has quickly developed into a starter at the Ligue 1 side. The former Lillestrom midfielder now has a chance to prove himself at the national team in the absence of Ndidi.

Speaking on Saturday, Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers confirmed Ndidi will be out for the coming weeks.

“Wilfred Ndidi, we just have to assess. He picked up an injury that might keep him out for a few weeks, which is a shame…and Marc Albrighton had to come off,” Rodgers said (via Leicestershire Live).

“Just as it looks like we’re getting players back… We’ve got a really good squad when they’re all available. It looks like we’ll get some back, but one or two might be out. We’ll have to see once the scans turn up later.”
