Peseiro’s men started their AFCON qualifying campaign with a home win over Sierra Leone.
Nigeria defeated Sierra Leone 2-1 in their Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Thursday.
The victory came after the Super Eagles lost their first two matches under Jose Peseiro last week.
A 1-0 defeat against Ecuador followed Nigeria’s 2-1 loss against Mexico as Pesiero’s side struggled for goals. However, the Super Eagles bounced back from the defeats by beating Sierra Leone in their first match in the AFCON qualifying tournament.
Jonathan Morsay put the guests ahead in the 11th minute, but Alex Iwobi scored the equalizer only five minutes later.
The Super Eagles then mounted more and more pressure on Sierra Leone’s backline to score the match-winner.
Victor Osimhen found the back of the net by converting an assist from Moses Simon’s precise assist in the 40th minute.
After the interval, the Super Eagles had several more chances to extend their lead. However, Mohamed Kamara’s brilliant performance in Sierra Leone’s goal prevented Nigeria from scoring their third goal of the night.
Nigeria will now prepare to face Sao Tome in their next AFCON qualifier on Monday. Let’s see if Peseiro’s men can build on their victory to seal another win under the Portuguese coach.
