The Brazil star is hoping a younger star can take on the iconic shirt.
Rodrygo has revealed he is Neymar’s pick for inheriting Brazil’s number 10 after he retires from international games.
The Brazilian starlet spent a brilliant 2021-22 campaign at Real Madrid, winning the La Liga and Champions League titles. He will most likely accompany the Selecao as they push to claim Brazil’s first World Cup title since 2002.
Neymar has hinted the upcoming Qatar games might be his last international tournament. The PSG star has apparently picked his favourite player to wear Brazil’s number 10 shirt after him.
“Neymar said to me ‘I’m already leaving the national team and the 10 is yours’,” he told Podpah.
“I didn’t even know what to say to him. I was embarrassed, I giggled and didn’t even know what to say properly.
“I told him that he must play some more, that I didn’t want [him] to [do so] now. And then he laughed.”
A string of legendary players have worn the shirt before Neymar. The likes of Pele, Zico, Rivaldo, and Ronaldinho were Brazil’s number 10s during Selecao’s multiple golden generations.
Rodrygo has made only five appearances for Brazil. However, he hopes the upcoming World Cup can be a stage for him to fully establish himself among the World’s best players.
“Zidane said that one day I would be the best in the world,” he added.
“Carlo Ancelotti also spoke about me. I try to train and evolve every day to get there. I was very happy.
“I have this dream and I know that if I dedicate myself every day, I can get there.”
