Brazil’s all-time top scorer had to leave almost midway into the World Cup qualifier against Uruguay due to an injury.

Neymar left the pitch in tears during Brazil’s 2-0 World Cup qualifying loss to Uruguay in Montevideo on Tuesday, succumbing to a knee injury.

The incident unfolded in the 44th minute when Neymar stumbled during a run, prompting immediate concern from players on both sides. Carried off on a stretcher, he was replaced by teammate Richarlison.

At half-time, Brazil’s medical team remained silent on Neymar’s condition. The team’s doctor, Rodrigo Lasmar, later said the forward took tests after the match and will undergo further examinations on Wednesday to gauge the extent of the injury.

Lasmar refused to state if the player had suffered a ligament injury, insisting it was too early to tell.

Taking to Instagram afterward, Neymar expressed his faith and trust in God.

“God knows about all things,” the 31-year-old posted.

“All the honor and all the glory will always be yours, my Lord. No matter what, I have faith.”

The setback for Neymar adds a layer of concern for Brazil as the Selecao navigate the challenges on the road to the World Cup.

Their 2-0 loss to Uruguay dropped them to third in the CONMEBOL standings, with seven points from four games (W2 D1 L1). They trail leaders and reigning world champions Argentina by five points.

Darwin Nunez and Nicolas de la Cruz were the goalscorers for Uruguay on Tuesday.
