Another disappointing display from Newcastle’s backline resulted in their eighth Premier League defeat of the season.

Newcastle defender Kieran Trippier has admitted his struggle for form, saying he’s “nowhere near” his top level.

Following a surprise defeat against Luton Town last weekend, Newcastle hoped to bounce back by beating Nottingham Forest in a home game. However, the Magpies were shocked by an incredible performance from their former player, Chris Wood, who scored a hat-trick for Forest at St. James’ Park.

Alexander Isak’s penalty marked Newcastle’s only goal of the night as they lost 3-1. Eddie Howe’s side slipped to seventh spot on the table after another poor defensive display.

Speaking after the game, Trippier said“Sometimes when you don’t mean it like myself – my standards have dropped – I’m old enough and experienced to talk about my own performances and know they’re nowhere near as good as the standards I’ve set recently.

“I don’t shy about it, I’ve had a lot of setbacks in my career and this is another one where I need to keep going and believing and I’ve always got that belief to bounce back.”

The defeat against Forest was Newcastle’s sixth defeat in their last seven matches. Next up, Eddie Howe’s men will travel to Anfield to take on Liverpool on Monday.
