AS Roma endeared itself and the city to Chris Smalling with the England international edging towards a return over Newcastle offer.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer let it known last year. Chris Smalling understood his decision and opted for a move away.

Smalling chose AS Roma and the decision was correct. The former Fulham player thrived in his new surroundings.

The city suited him and he is purpose-built for Serie A. It was a match made in heaven. Smalling finished the season with plenty of minutes under his belt and Europa League knockout rounds to contend for.

United could have come face to face against Smalling had the Romans progressed. But the Italians were dumped out with Smalling recalled by the Red Devils to keep him injury-free in the transfer market.

The Greenwich native begrudgingly returned but had made up his mind. Mirror reported that Newcastle United want him to reinforce their backline. Steve Bruce fancies him and Mike Ashley will fund the deal.

But Smalling does not want to play in Premier League anymore. He has his heart in Roma and wants to play alongside Eden Dzeko. This gives Roma more bargaining power in future negotiations.

United’s asking price of 20 million Euros will come down. Especially with the player edging towards a move. However, Roma can meet the valuation with the bankroll from their billionaire owners.
