The Magpies have lost €64 million summer signing Sandro Tonali for the rest of the season.
The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has handed Sandro Tonali a 10-month ban for betting infractions.
As a result, Tonali will remain ineligible to play until August. This means his season is over. He cannot play for Newcastle United or the Italian national team, including the upcoming Euro 2024 tournament.
The 23-year-old will also undergo eight months of rehabilitation for his gambling addiction.
Tonali joined Newcastle in the summer from AC Milan for €64 million. Since his arrival, the midfielder has played 12 times for the Magpies and scored one goal. His absence will come as a blow to the club.
Eddie Howe has already stressed that his squad is short-handed. The manager has five key players injured at the moment. That said, he has vowed to stand by Tonali and insisted the Italian is part of his long-term plans.
Tonali’s Italy teammate Nicolo Fagioli got a seven-month ban for betting on matches last week. The Juventus midfielder will also undergo rehabilitation for his gambling problem.
Newcastle are scheduled to face Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League on Saturday.
