Arteta slammed the referee for his “embarrassing” performance during the game.

Newcastle defeated Arsenal 1-0 in their Premier League game on Saturday. A highly physical clash saw the Magpies edge out Mikel Arteta’s side with a controversial goal. Anthony Gordon scored Newcastle’s match-winner, which was allowed to stand after a lengthy VAR check.

The ball seemed to be out of the pitch in the build-up, but that wasn’t the only reason for the double-check. Two additional replays for foul and offside both failed to convince the referee to disallow the goal.

Speaking after the game, Arteta didn’t hold back his frustration with the referee’s performance. The Gunners boss said: “We didn’t deserve to lose the match playing in their ground and we lose because of clear and obvious decisions.

“It is embarrassing, it is a disgrace, that’s what it is, a disgrace. We’ve been taking it up (with the PGMOL) for months.”

England legend Gary Lineker posted Arteta’s interview on his Twitter account, writing“Mikel Arteta having a proper rant post match, ‘It’s embarrassing. It’s a disgrace'”. Shearer replied: “What was?”

Arsenal have issued a statement criticizing “unacceptable refereeing and VAR errors” in their defeat against Newcastle. Following the controversial match, Arteta’s men return to the Champions League, where they take on Sevilla on Wednesday.
