The Blues’ positive result against Brentford was undoubtedly a team effort, but one player particularly deserves credit for that victory.

Gary Neville has singled out “absolutely brilliant” Edouard Mendy from Chelsea’s nervy win over Brentford in their most recent Premier Leaague outing.

Chelsea earned a hard-fought 1-0 win in the west London derby on Saturday, Mendy playing a pivotal role in helping his side survive a setback.

The Senegalese shot-stopper produced a string of stunning saves, denying Ivan Toney and Pontus Jansson from point-blank range before going on to palm away Christian Norgaard’s overhead kick in stoppage time.

“He was absolutely brilliant, if you’re going to win a title there are going to be games where you don’t play well, you don’t deserve to win the game but your goalkeeper makes two or three world-class saves,” Neville told Sky Sports (via Metro).

“He has made that difference, if you think of Kepa in goal for Chelsea when Frank [Lampard] was there, it was a big problem, they were conceding too many goals.

“It got to the point where he wouldn’t even dive for it, it was in the middle of his net, two metres away from the post.

“It’s a lot more difficult to score against Chelsea, not just because of the change to the back five, which Thomas Tuchel brought in, but also the goalkeeper.”
