Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek is out of the Netherlands squad for the European Championship.

An injured Donny van de Beek is out of the Netherlands’ European Championship squad for this summer.

The 24-year-old played the full 90 minutes of Manchester United’s 2-1 final day win over Wolves in the Premier League on May 24 and had made Frank de Boer’s initial 26-man squad.

But he didn’t feature in any of the Netherlands’ two warm-up games against Scotland and Georgia in the past week and trained away from the team.

The Dutch FA has now confirmed Van de Beek has withdrawn with an unspecified injury. Despite the loss of a key player, De Boer has elected to not select a replacement for his squad.

“Donny van de Beek has to let the European championship pass by. The Manchester United midfielder is struggling with an injury,” read a statement.

“As a result, the 19-time international, who last played for the national team in March against Gibraltar is not available in time for the European Championship. Head coach Frank de Boer hasn’t selected a replacement.”

The Netherlands boss is currently preparing for the national team’s Group C opener in Euro 2020 against Ukraine in Amsterdam on Sunday.
