Napoli decided against signing Cristiano Ronaldo as they wanted to build a ‘young team’, according to club director Cristiano Giuntoli.

Ronaldo reportedly asked United to allow his departure earlier this summer. However, the 37-year-old remained at Old Trafford after receiving no suitable offers.

Following debunked links with Bayern Munich and Chelsea, a few Italian sources claimed Napoli might push to return CR7 to Serie A.

However, Guintoli insists the Italian giants never entered the race to sign Ronaldo.

“During the transfer market we pretend to chat with everyone, and sometimes we do it for real – but we wanted to invest in a young team,” the Napoli director told Corriere dello Sport.

Napoli has relied on Victor Osimhen and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia upfront, shocking Liverpool with a 4-1 win on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Ronaldo has failed to impress in his few appearances under Erik ten Hag. The five-time Ballon d’Or started for United in their 1-0 defeat to Sociedad in the Europa League.

However, his performance will most likely convince Ten Hag to stick to his four-man attacking unit of Antony, Fernandes, Sancho, and Rashford.

The Red Devils will return to Europa League to meet Sheriff Tiraspol on Sunday.
