Thomas Muller has congratulated Javi Martinez for scoring the goal that proved to be the winner for Bayern Munich against Sevilla.

Bayern Munich lifted the UEFA Super Cup trophy after beating Sevilla 2-1 at the Puskas Arena in Budapest, Hungary.

Hansi Flick’s men found themselves trailing, something they aren’t accustomed to, just after 13 minutes but Leon Goretzka made sure that his team walk into the half-time break without carrying any deficit.

The two teams were inseparable after 90 minutes and it took half-an-hour more to decide the contest.

It was Javi Martinez who put his side on the front foot within just five minutes of coming on as the match ended 2-1.

Martinez had carried out a similar stunt before when he came off the bench to score an extra-time goal in Bayern’s previous Super Cup triumph against Chelsea in 2013.

And a repeat on Thursday night was enough to warrant him the ‘Mr. Super Cup’ nickname from teammate Thomas Muller.

“Congratulations to the team and to Javi Martinez, our Mr. Super Cup,” Muller told UEFA.com after the match.

“We’re delighted, it’s unbelievable. We’re so tired after 120 minutes against Sevilla, a tough opponent. We fought hard and showed as a team that we have that winner’s mentality, even when we’re not at our best.”
