Jose Mourinho’s hopes of leading Tottenham to a first Premier League title could be derailed by three stars, says Gabriel Agbonlahor.
Agbonlahor has named three Tottenham center-backs in Toby Alderweireld, Davinson Sanchez, and Eric Dier as Mourinho’s biggest obstacles.
Talk of a surprise Premier League title has gathered momentum in recent weeks, with the club sitting second in the standings and a point behind leaders Leicester City.
After suffering an opening-day defeat to Everton, Spurs have remained unbeaten in their last seven games. Only Chelsea, meanwhile, have bettered their tally of 19 goals scored – thanks to Harry Kane and Son Heung-min’s exploits.
Mourinho’s side also boast the joint-best defensive record on nine goals conceded alongside Leicester, Aston Villa, Wolves, and Manchester City.
Despite the impressive records on all fronts, however, Agbonlahor feels Spurs’ center-backs could derail their title hopes.
“You know what? I can’t say Spurs can’t win because it’s a strange season, it’s really strange,” the former Villa striker told Football Insider.
“You win a game you move up four places you go down four places. Spurs will be up there in the top four.
“But I just don’t see them winning the league because of their defense, I don’t think their defense is up to scratch, really, and they will concede goals.
“I look at their center-backs and I just see there are goals to be leaked there. They haven’t got that big centre-half who is going to get you out of trouble.
“Alderweireld, Sanchez, Dier, they’re okay defenders but I don’t think they’re the ones who are going to take Spurs to a title.”
Although Mourinho has played down talk of a Premier League title for Spurs as it’s still too early to call on it.
