After Ozil made his feelings over a transfer to Tottenham very clear, Mourinho offered a savage response in return.

Mesut Ozil insists he would rather retire than play for Tottenham, but Jose Mourinho wants to know ‘who told him that Tottenham would be interested?’

The Arsenal midfielder is set to leave the Emirates Stadium either in the summer, once his contract expires, or in a potential January move to Turkish side Fenerbahce.

But Ozil, who has been a Gunner since 2013, assured the club supporters in a Twitter Q&A on Monday evening that he would rather retire than join north London rivals Spurs.

Quizzed on what he would choose between retiring or signing for Spurs, the German replied: “Easy question. Retire!”

Ozil’s comments drew a cheeky reply from his former Real Madrid boss Mourinho, who now coaches Spurs in the Premier League.

“Who told him that Tottenham would be interested in signing him?,” Mourinho fired back in a press conference on Tuesday.

Ozil, meanwhile, also stated he would like to play in the MLS and the Turkish Super Lig before heading into retirement.
