The Portuguese superstar failed to fulfil his dream of winning the World Cup in Qatar.
Sofiane Boufal has opened up on Morocco’s historic victory over Portugal in the World Cup quarter-finals.
A remarkable start at the World Cup saw the Atlas Lions qualify ahead of Croatia and Belgium as the Group F leaders. Boufal and co then stunned Spain by beating them in the penalties and reaching the quarter-finals.
Portugal manager Fernando Santos decided to start Cristiano Ronaldo on the bench for his side’s match against Morocco. CR7 came into the game in the 51st minute but couldn’t stop the African giants from winning the game 1-0.
The 38-year-old left the pitch in tears as his World Cup dreams went up in smoke with an unexpected defeat.
“With all due respect to him, but I enjoyed seeing him cry, rather than us crying,” Boufal told Qatari channel Alkass.
Morocco lost against France and Croatia in their remaining games, ending the World Cup in the fourth spot. The Atlas Lions’ crazy campaign attracted interest toward their main star, with Boufal already knowing his transfer priorities.
“I prefer Messi over Ronaldo & the club I wish to play for is Barcelona,” he added.
Boufal currently plays for Al Rayyan, who sit tenth in Qatar Stars League. The former Southampton star hopes to return to Morocco’s squad for their upcoming African Championship qualifiers in June.
