Luka Modric reveals he agreed with Roman Abramovich to move to Chelsea by Daniel Levy was having absolutely none of it.
Luka Modric realized after three years at what was then Whitehart Lane that Tottenham Hotspurs could not match his ambition.
The Croatian international was agitating for a move to a club that he felt would not only challenge for honors every season but have a realistic chance of winning them too.
In his autobiography which is being serialized by British newspaper the Guardian, Modric reveals how he actually pushed for a move to Chelsea a year before he left for Real Madrid.
He explains how the move was all but agreed face to face with Roman Abramovich,. However, when he returned to London, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy was having none of it.
Modric recalls the meeting with the Russian billionaire was straight and to the point.
He said:
“Abramovich wasn’t beating around the bush and said: ‘We know you are a quality player. I’d like you to sign for Chelsea’.”
“My feeling was that it was time for a move, I wanted to fight for trophies and win titles, and I felt this wouldn’t happen if I stayed at Tottenham. I wanted to move to a more ambitious club.”
“I knew Tottenham’s chairman Daniel Levy wouldn’t want to hear about it.”
“I arrived in London before pre-season training and went to talk to the chairman. There were no harsh words or insults as the media said, but the conversation was tense.”
“He reprimanded me for publicly announcing I wanted to leave and repeated that Tottenham had no intention of selling at any price.”
Could Tottenham finally replace Luka Modric with the signing of Jack Grealish?
