Pep Guardiola’s right-hand man leaves City to continue his career in the U.S.

Austin FC has announced the hiring of Rodolfo Borrell, a top assistant manager from Manchester City, as their sporting director.

Borrell brings with him nine seasons of experience at Manchester City. He initially served as the Premier League giants’ global technical director before being appointed Pep Guardiola’s first assistant in 2016.

Borrell played a crucial role in Manchester City‘s incredible 2022-23 campaign. The Citizens secured a historic treble by winning the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup trophies.

Now, Borrell joins Austin FC, a club in just its third year of competition. Although they faced struggles in the first half of the 2023 season, consecutive victories have put Austin back in contention for the playoffs.

Anthony Precourt, the founder and majority owner of Austin FC, expressed his confidence in Borrell, stating, “He brings an incredibly impressive track record, a wealth of experience, and passion for the beautiful game, and we fully believe he is the right person to move our ambitions forward and develop the best players, coaches, and staff for the first team, second team, and academy.”

Borrell’s appointment follows the interim tenure of Sean Rubio, who had been serving as Austin’s interim sporting director since the departure of Claudio Reyna in January.

Having left Manchester City after nine years, Borrell becomes an integral part of Austin FC’s plans as they aim to strengthen their position in the MLS.
