The departure of an iconic figure leaves the Brazil international with a chance to make one of the center-back spots his own in the Los Blancos team.

Eder Militao can become “one of the pillars of Real Madrid”, according to Thiago Silva.

Finding consistent minutes on the pitch was difficult for Militao in his first season at Real Madrid, with Sergio Ramos, Raphael Varane, and Nacho Fernandez all above in the squad pecking order.

An injury to Ramos last season, however, opened a window of opportunities for the former Porto, and he took them with both hands. He made 21 appearances across all competitions in 2020/21, putting in solid defensive displays.

The Brazilian can hope for getting more minutes in the coming season, with Ramos now a thing of the past at the club and Varane’s future also uncertain.

“I believe that from now, with the exit of Sergio Ramos, he is going to be one of the pillars of Real Madrid,” Silva told of Militao to reporters, per Sport.

“I told him after our game against each other [in the Champions League semi-final last season] to continue like this, that he really was having a great year and to continue like this because in this form, we are going to be playing in the national team for a long time.”

“Militao trusts his speed a lot. He’s a very quick guy and sometimes he loses his position a bit because he knows he will track back successfully.

“That’s something I learned when I got to Milan and it’s something I try to tell and teach him.”
