Suarez ended his year-long spell at Gremio amid reports of a possible transfer to the United States.

Luis Suarez has opened up on a chronic knee injury that has forced him to contemplate retirement.

Suarez joined Gremio last January to start a new chapter in his career in the Brazilian Serie A. He spent a fantastic season at the club, registering 15 goals and 11 assists in 32 Brazilian top-flight appearances.

The Uruguayan star has emerged as a major transfer target for Inter Miami ahead of the new Major League Soccer (MLS) campaign. However, fitness issues could prevent Suarez from reuniting with his close friend and former Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi.

“I can feel pain, my body is speaking for me,” he said. “I want to enjoy and then decide for myself after a long career. I need to rest, enjoy my family… then the destiny will know where I’ll be in the future.”

He added: “I have to think that in maybe five years I won’t be able to play 5-a-side football with my friends

“The truth is that the first steps in the morning are very painful. Anyone who sees me thinks it’s impossible for me to play a game. My son tells me asks to play with him and I can’t.”
