Lionel Messi was pleased to see Argentina record a win against Peru as they returned to winning ways in the World Cup 2022 qualifiers.

Argentina captain Lionel Messi was pleased with his side’s showing against Peru and believes the team are getting stronger after their latest display.

Nicolas Gonzalez and Lautaro Martinez scored first-half goals in Lima on Tuesday to hand La Albiceleste an easy stroll against their opponents.

The victory saw Lionel Messi and company record their third win in four World Cup 2022 qualifiers.

With that result, Argentina also extended their unbeaten run to 11 games. They have won their past three away qualifiers which is a feat they have not achieved since 2000.

Messi fumed after Argentina played out to a 1-1 draw with Paraguay last Friday but there was to be nothing of such on this occasion.

The Barca star was sure to express his delight at a performance where they were mostly dominant.

“Happy with the victory, we needed it after the game we played the other day,” the star said, via Argentina’s Twitter account.

“From the beginning we had a great match, the goals came and we created many, many chances.”

Messi added: “The second half the other day was already very good and I think we continued on the same line, even raising the level a bit.

“I think this is the way we have to follow. Little by little we are becoming stronger as a group.”

For Messi, the Peru game was his 142nd outing in an Argentina jersey. Meaning he joins Brazilian legend Cafu for the equal fifth most appearances by a South American man.

The result leaves Argentina in second place in their qualifiers group, just two points behind Brazil who have four wins from four so far.
