After helping Barcelona to another victory over the weekend, Messi is now within touching distance of another mythical club record.

Xavi Hernandez’s record of 767 appearances for Barcelona is within Lionel Messi’s sights and should be broken before the end of the season.

Messi made his 750th appearance in all competitions on Sunday’s trip to Huesca. The Argentine couldn’t get on the scoresheet, but he linked up well with Frenkie de Jong to assist the Dutchman for the club’s match-winner.

Another 18 games, therefore, will be enough to break Xavi’s record.

Barcelona have another 22 La Liga matches left and a two-legged Champions League tie against Paris Saint-Germain in the last-16, leaving them with a total of 24 games. The Blaugrana also have Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup fixtures coming up.

Spanish outlet Marca, meanwhile, states that Messi only needs another five games to equal Xavi’s record for the most LaLiga appearances with Barcelona at 505.

The six-time Ballon d’Or winner is set to return to action in the Blaugrana’s trip to Athletic Club in LaLiga on Wednesday night.
