The Dutchman opened his account in only his second La Liga appearance for Barcelona following his free transfer from Lyon.

Memphis Depay has claimed Barcelona’s failure to beat Athletic Club on Saturday means he cannot fully enjoy his first competitive goal for the club.

The former Manchester United winger scored a brilliant equalizer in the second half to level the scoreline at the San Mames after Inigo Martinez’s header left Ronald Koeman’s side trailing. He expertly controlled the ball inside the box before hammering it home with a half volley.

But Barcelona, who lost Eric Garcia to a red card during injury-time and Gerard Pique to a calf injury, couldn’t find a late winner and had to settle for a 1-1 draw.

“It feels wonderful to score a goal, but I am disappointed with the result,” Depay told Barca TV. “There are the two sides. I cannot really enjoy it too much because we didn’t get the three points.

“It was a tough game, but obviously to score my first goal for the club means a lot and I want to bring more.”

Barcelona will now face Getafe at Camp Nou next Sunday in La Liga before the international break begins.
