The Red Devils drew first blood in north London on Sunday but the goal was controversially ruled out following a VAR review.

Scott McTominay admits he is “not a fan of VAR” but refuses to point fingers at the referee for his controversial decision during Manchester United’s match against Tottenham.

Edinson Cavani thought he had put Man United on the front foot after slotting the ball home at the 36-minute mark, but the goal was ruled out.

Referee Chris Kavanagh, on VAR review, adjudged McTominay to have fouled Son Heung-min in the build-up to the goal and went on to award Spurs a free-kick.

What followed was an act of rubbing salt in the wound as Red Devils conceded just four minutes later, with Son getting on the scoresheet.

Nevertheless, they were able to get the job done as Fred, Edinson Cavani, and Mason Greenwood inspired a 3-1 comeback victory.

“I’m sure there will be a lot of talk about that, but the referees have a tough job,” McTominay told Sky Sports.

“I’m personally not a fan of VAR, but that’s part and parcel of the game now. It was obviously a goal, the referee’s made a mistake, but that happens, everyone makes mistakes in life.

“At the time you can’t accept it, but you’ve just got to get on with the game.”
