With his brace against Istanbul Basaksehir, Kylian Mbappe surpassed Lionel Messi in an all-time Champions League record.

Kylian Mbappe keeps shattering records that not even players like Lionel Messi can keep for much longer. Today, the French forward scored a brace in Neymar’s hat-trick show vs Istanbul Basaksehir. The first goal was a penalty after the Brazilian player provoked it. During the second half, the French forward rounded up the victory with his brace after an assist from Di Maria. With these two goals, Mbappe reached an all-time record that was previously held by Lionel Messi.

The Argentine star was already living through the Pep Guardiola years at FC Barcelona when he became the youngest player in history to reach 20 Champions League goals. Leo was 22 years and 267 days old when he reached this milestone. At 21 years and 355 days old, Kylian Mbappe reached 21 goals to become the youngest player to ever do it.

Mbappe won’t keep his record for much longer.

Even if it’s hard to believe, Kylian Mbappe’s record might not remain as such for much longer. When he started his career in 2017, we didn’t think finding a player more prolific than him at such an early age would be impossible. However, the last couple of seasons have given us Erling Haaland. The Norwegian striker is moving fast towards that record with Borussia Dortmund.

Very few will doubt he will obliterate Mbappe’s record and maybe even Ronaldo’s someday. So far, he’s been playing at an impressive level but he will keep improving over the next five years. Mbappe can celebrate his record as much as he wants but he must be aware it won’t last for much longer.
