The former Brighton star is spending his debut season at Stamford Bridge.

Marc Cucurella has admitted he prefers to play in a back-four system at Chelsea.

Thomas Tuchel has hinted he might use Cucurella as a centre-back or a wing-back this season. However, the 24-year-old has revealed his desire to keep playing as a left-back after his move from Brighton.

“The three positions on the left side is good for me. I think maybe best for me is back four, left-back, it’s where I played in the academies,” the Spaniard told reporters.

Playing as a left-back will put Cucurella in direct competition with Ben Chilwell. Tuchel started the Spaniard ahead of Chilwell for his side’s London derby last weekend.

“[Ben] helped me a lot in these first day, he’s a very good person,” Cucurella explained.

“We need to work hard to play in one position. We have two players for one position, but if one player is better, he will put him in the line up. This is good for the team.”

Chelsea were seconds away from winning their derby against Tottenham last week when a later equalizer from Harry Kane denied them the victory.

Before Kane’s header, however, Tottenham’s Cristian Romero had pulled Cucurella’s hair inside the box, hauling him to the ground.

Asked about the foul, the Chelsea star said: “I didn’t see it on the TV, the video.

“I think it’s very clear but this is one error of the referee or VAR. Sometimes the referees have good decisions, sometimes not.”
