Marcus Rashford believes the team should thank one of their ex-coaches for the number of penalties Manchester United got in 2020.

Manchester United were awarded a record-breaking 14 penalties in the 2019-20 Premier League campaign. It was a total of 22 across all competitions.

This season, the Red Devils have continued with the trend to get many penalties. Something Jurgen Klopp and Jose Mourinho already complained for a couple of times in their post-match interviews.

However, Rashford reveals that Mourinho himself played a great role in United’s improved penalty record.

“There have been times when we have probably not got penalties. I remember when Jose [Mourinho] was manager, there were five or six times where I should have had a penalty,” he said via Express.

“Jose ended up saying to me: ‘If you are not savvy about the way you do it, then you are not going to get given it.’ After that, we started to get a few penalties.

“It was something in terms of development you have to learn that and understand it.”

“When you are making runs in behind or dribbling with the ball and if you see a challenge coming, you don’t want to get tackled because you are looking at an opportunity to score a goal,” the Man United forward added.

“It is just a case of us wanting to score goals and the teams wanting to defend goals and penalties can happen.”
